I hit a journaling slump in 2009. This is my shortest entry ever. "We went shopping today and it stormed." Wow, Shaynie. How exciting.
Even the most dedicated of all journalers will nod their heads in agreement when you mention that that, every once in a while, journaling just loses it's wonder. It's true. It happens, and it isn't necessarily bad.
How to keep journaling fun
Remember, it's not a chore or an obligation
When you feel like you've committed a heinous crime when you skip a day, or guilty when you only write a paragraph or two, your journal will be a source of frustration to you. Just remember, it's okay if you skip a few days (or even weeks!). And it's okay if you don't feel like writing much. Journaling should be done because you want to, not because you feel like you must.
If you're having a hard time digging journaling, associate journaling with something pleasant.
I have heard several journalers recommend journaling rituals--such as brewing a cup of tea or some such comforting drink, putting on some inspiring music, or lighting a candle. I have never done this, mainly because my schedule really doesn't allow me that luxury (or maybe because I am too lazy :P) and because I write when I feel that "urge" inside--which one day might be as soon as I wake up, and one day it might be in the car on the way to the store.
However, we humans are creatures of habit, so if you light a French vanilla candle every time you sit down to journal, you'll soon be inspired to write every time you smell French vanilla! Again, pleasant-journaling-association is totally a matter of choice, so don't feel pressured to do so if you don't want to.
Go back and read some old entries.
It doesn't matter if it's in your present journal--just a few weeks back--or a journal from years ago, old entries will be sure to spark some sort of inspiration in your veins. I often feel inspired by what I was going through at the time (what was important to me several years ago, or what was constantly on my mind) or the style I wrote in from year to year. Sometimes I like my old style of writing (because my present voice has evolved over several years) and I try to copy how I sounded long ago in my present journal. But anyway, reading old entries is a great way to get ideas of what to write about. If all else fails, copy an old entry into you present journal and edit it. Can you make it sound any better?
Does journaling ever get old for you?

I've been in such a slump the past few weeks over journalling. Feeling sick and being busy are my excuses but I know that after a journalling session I feel so much better. It really refreshes me! Admittedly, reaching three pages per week feels good to me {I have small handwriting} but I'd love to develop routines that made journalling as much a part of my day as walking through the village to school or helping cook dinner. I've found that pinning a list of prompts onto my pinboard {three lovely things that happened, what I want to do when I grow up, why yellow is my current favourite colour, are just a few on there} really help to spark some ideas and pull me out of a slump.
Great post, Shaynie! I don't know why, but I laughed while reading. Maybe because it sounds so familiar :D
Love your short entry. My shortest entry is "Ich grüße dich...Servus!", which is hard to translate, but it means something like "I say hello to you...Hi!", which doesn't make sense at all :D
In 2009 I wrote in my journal every day for 126 days. It was a lot of fun, but it didn't feel like an obligation. Then one day while eating breakfast (yes, I remember that) I nearly dropped my Nutella bread when it came to my mind that I forgot to write something in my journal the day before. But it wasn't a tragedy. It was a bit sad, but it was okay :)
And reading old entries is the best thing ever. I recommend it to everybody who keeps a journal. It's inspiring and sometimes I write a journal entry aobut an old entry. There is also an entry about entry about an entry ;) Yes, my journals are somehow complex...
Libby~Yes, being sick can certainly make journaling slack off! The prompts on a pin board is a great idea!
Antonia~You know, your journals sound so interesting! :D I would love to read them!!! But I don't know German.... :D
Haha, thanks. Such a pity you don't know German ;)
One of my best friends said that my journal entries are amazingly funny (I showed her some parts)
I've been feeing like journaling was a chore, and I wanted to reinvent my journal so I looked up a whole bunch of journaling ideas online, copied the ones I liked and then wrote them out on slips of paper and threw them into a bowl I keep in my room....So, when i go to journal everynight I pick an idea and do it...I really like how's it's changed my journaling habits...
I edit my journal sometimes too...and look back all the time Like looking back on a wonderful time in your life recently and editing it to make it more exciting or just memories you have from that time/day.
I really enjoy this blog Shaynie, keep up the good work! :D
These past 8 months have been a downer for me.I felt like I wasn't talking just writing down what I did that day.Now with inspiration form a new diary I feel like I'm getting out of my slump.Sierra
Antonia~Too bad. :( Maybe one day when I learn, finally! :D
Josie~That is a great idea! I did something similar earlier this year, and it works very well! Thank you for your kind words; they mean a lot!
Sierra~A new journal always inspires me, too! There is just something about a new journal!
I've only been journaling for a year, or two. I used to try and try to force myself to write in one, but it never really worked out for me. Then one day I felt like writing, but not in story form. I pulled out a notebook, wrote "My Journal" on the front page and started to write. I've been doing it ever since, and loving it! Its never gotten old for me, but probably because since I started that day I've always just looked at it as somewhere to spill the contents of my mind. I don't worry about writing in it, I just do when I need to.
Great post!
Wow, I like that, Georgiana! I agree, forced journaling usually never works out...for me anyway!
Yes - I'm in a slump now - I used to try to write something everyday - but now I'm working on writing when I really FEEL it.
Yeah, I had that problem a while ago. :(
I am a diarist / journaler from waaay back - I started when I was 12, in 1987! Occasionally it has felt like a chore but mostly I just love doing it, especially reading back over it...ESPECIALLY now it includes the adventures of our two little boys! I did try quitting once but I just didn't feel happy about it, and in the end I started writing again within 3 months.
My book total is 26 and counting...am just about to start a brand-new gorgeous 'paperblanks' one (I just discovered them!) but hope to soon do a bookbinding course and make them myself. Sound a bit obsessive I know, but I'm really not! ;) Is good to know there are others out there with similar creative urges!!
Michelle~Wow! 1987! That's awesome! :D Thanks for the comment. ;)
i go through seasons of writing.but what really gets me back to it is reading/watching vlogs/blogs on reading and writing
As a Christian homeschool graduate who co-owns a company devoted to helping others journal, I was THRILLED to find your blog. I hope that you will find more inspiration to continue blogging. I wanted to let you know that I posted a link to this particluar blog on our facebook page. What you say here fits in with our philosophy of journaling and I just had to share!
Thanks!
